The Desert Southwest Conference is seeking a Director for Camp Mingus Mountain located in Prescott Valley, AZ. This role oversees all aspects of camp life including hospitality, administration, programming, facilities, food service, and safety to ensure an exceptional experience for guests, campers, and staff. The Camp Director upholds the mission, policies, and goals established by the Executive Director, the Board of Camping and Retreat Ministries, and the Desert Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church, fostering a safe, enriching, and faith-centered environment that promotes growth, learning, and spiritual development.
Essential Functions:
- Oversee daily operations of the camp and retreat center, ensuring safe, well-maintained, and ACA-compliant facilities.
- Provide on-site hospitality and serve as the primary host for guest groups
- Lead the camp and retreat team to administer the site's Risk Management Plan.
- Evaluate and update the site’s Risk Management Plan as needed in collaboration with the ED, Kitchen Manager, and Maintenance Manager.
- Assist in the management of the maintenance of real property on the site.
- Create, maintain, and implement administrative and site-specific systems and procedures for operations and facilities, health care, and specialized activities. Ensure compliance with all local, State and Federal standards.
- Provide program leadership when needed to facilitate camp activities i.e. archery, crafts, low ropes, etc.
- Provides program design assistance and/or leadership for DSC summer camps, winter camps, and retreats.
- Collaborate with the Maintenance and Kitchen Managers to schedule inspections, coordinate repairs, and maintain equipment, vehicles, and grounds to meet all safety and regulatory standards.
- Recruit, train, and supervise staff and volunteers including seasonal, kitchen, janitorial, and counselor interns, ensuring appropriate certification, training, and adequate coverage for all camp and retreat activities.
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board to design and implement camp and retreat programming aligned with the mission of The Desert Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church.
- Manage administrative and business operations, including budgeting, financial recordkeeping, reporting, and the camp store, while collaborating with the Executive Director to develop and monitor the annual budget, fundraising goals, and long-term financial plans.
- Collaborate with Conference staff, congregations, and community partners to strengthen relationships and expand outreach beyond existing faith communities.
- Assist in developing and executing marketing strategies to promote camp and retreat ministries through digital and print channels.
- Support the creation of new and innovative ministry opportunities that expand the reach and impact of Desert Southwest Conference Camping and Retreat Ministries.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience in a relevant field is required.
- 3-5 years of experience in the camp and retreat setting with expertise in camp management and a general understanding of site and facilities management is required.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Current knowledge or willingness to learn the polity and theology of The United Methodist Church is required.
- Must reside on-site or within a reasonable distance of the camp to ensure timely response to emergencies, operational needs, and guest support.
- Willingness to pursue job related continuing education, training, and certification opportunities, especially those offered through United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries Association.
- Active participation in a United Methodist faith community is preferred.
- Excellent administrative and public relations skills.
- Must have the ability to prioritize and organize varied/multiple tasks.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Must be able to work independently and take initiative to complete tasks.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 360 or Google Workspace software, including word processing, and spreadsheets.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn basic plumbing, electrical and maintenance.
- Possess or be able to obtain and maintain:
o CPR Certification
o American Red Cross Standard First Aid (or equivalent) Certification
o Food Handler’s Card
o Archery Certification
- Able and willing to work extended hours during the summer program season and available to work weekends as needed to support retreats and year-round programs.
Physical Requirements:
- Physical ability to participate in activities, run, climb, swim, or lift and work outside in all weather conditions.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
